Eagle Scout Project at The Elizabethan Gardens
August 01, 2012 | 07:51 AM Maintaining the beautiful Elizabethan Gardens year-round requires labor and proper facilities. Thanks to assistance from local scouts, plants grown at The Elizabethan Gardens will be prepared to face the winter in cozy comfort.
During the winter gardeners often use a structure called a cold frame which is a transparent-roofed enclosure, built close to the ground to protect plants from the cold. After many happy years of use The Gardens' cold frame was in dire need of repair and reached a point where it was no longer unusable.
Eagle Scout Candidate Elliott Huskey of Manteo volunteered to fix the cold frame green house with assistance from Allen Eure, Brock Keller, Alex Lane and John Keller. Rich Howell, a valuable volunteer at The Gardens, lent his indispensable knowledge to the project.
"The result was amazing," stated Nancy Harvey, Volunteer Coordinator for The Gardens. "After a project plan review and safety briefing by Howell, the team tackled the project with skillful determination."
Harvey explains that over the course of the several days, Huskey directed the team through the process of demolition, removal and construction. The team replaced the roof rafters and added internal framing to augment the existing structure. They completed the repairs with roof panels, framed out windows, and reinstalling a new cold frame door. Once repairs were complete, they ably cleared the area of debris and returned the potted plants to their original areas. The pressure-treated lumber and rust resistant hardware was a welcome replacement to the weatherworn structure.
In all, the project was completed over a period of several months and 218 total project hours.
Construction team members included Rich Howell, Elliott Huskey, Allen Eure, Brock Keller, Alex Lane and John Keller who were a part of the cold frame team. Garden Staff members assisting the team were Ned Cabe, Jeff Lewis and Carl Curnutte.
"I know well the challenge of completing an Eagle Scout project," said Carl Curnutte, executive director of The Elizabethan Gardens who also happens to be an Eagle Scout. "The core values one learns from the scouts about contributing to the betterment of your community certainly left a lasting impression on me. It's something I live by to this day. We were proud to benefit from their labor."
The cold frame project was one of several Eagle Scout projects completed at The Gardens over the course of their 52 years. Those interested in volunteering or working on projects at The Gardens should contact Nancy Harvey at 252.473.1554.
