Reid version of health care reform provides for abortions
November 19, 2009 The Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid released the Senate version of HR 3590 today. You can download the 2,032-page fill by clicking here. (Be patient, it is a large file).
The most obvious element of the massive document begins on page 116, in Section 1303. Special Rules. Subsection (a) says: "Special Rules Relating to Coverage of Abortion Services."
You may read it for yourself but here is what you will find.
Contrary to President Obama's promise in his message to a Joint Session of Congress on September 9, 2009 the bill provides for funding of abortions. It requires at least one of the public options provide for coverage for abortions.
But the most controversial aspect is that a tax will be assessed on all enrollees in the public option. This tax will be paid into a U. S. Treasury account and these funds will be used to pay for abortion services.
In other words. if you buy any of the public option plans then you will be paying for abortions for women who choose them, whether you agree with abortions or not, you will be paying for them. Moreover, the Secretary of Health and Human Services is authorized by the act to establish rules for whether Federal tax dollars appropriated to HHS are available to be used to pay for abortions.
We'll have more on the bill later so check back for more.
A big vote comes as early as Saturday on whether the bill will proceed to the floor to be debated. That vote is critical.
In the meantime, click on the picture of the capitol on the left menu bar to take you to a site with contact information for Sen. Kay Hagan. Or, just click here.
Abortions are bad enough, but I don't feel overjoyed about having to pay for other elective surgery either - like breast enhancement or a nose job or liposuction and the like. Why not take a page out of the Dem's book and delete any reference to abortion and substitute "elective surgery"??
