Rant & Rave is a special feature we offer which allows users of this website to post entries without their identity being published publicly. The feature does not, however, accept completely anonymous submissions. We must know your identity and we use special software to confirm that identity and track the machine from which the entry is received.
While the Terms of Use of this website apply to Rant & Rave there are special Terms of Use of this particular feature. While we accept some postings from anonymous sources as the website Terms of Use indicate, the Observer retains the option of requiring identification to us of the source of any posting. While we do not post the identity publicly we may insist on knowing your name, address and phone number before posting a Rant & Rave entry. See: Privacy Policy. In addition, supplying this information requires that it be done via a primary email address from the Internet Service Provider used to make the post and that ISP must be the regular service to which the poster subscribes (i.e., no public computers).
As stated in the Terms of Use we use cookies to identify the machine from which a post originates. Thus, identity confirmation must be made from the machine that submitted the original post. We do use special proprietary software to both place identifying information on you which allows us to both confirm the identity and track the use thereof. This is normally done only once as long as the future postings come from the original machine. If you do not wish such identity verification data to be placed on your machine you should not use this service. This is the only feature we use such technology with but we do use tracking cookies on other pages.
If we do feel a need to reveal your identity we will make every effort, but cannot guarantee, to notify you before doing so unless compelled to do so by court order. The Observer does cooperate with law enforcement and we do honor civil subpoenas without benefit of prior notification. Not only do we cooperate, but if we become aware of a potential crime that presents a threat to another person we will take the initiative to report this to law enforcement. We do not, under any circumstance, condone or knowingly participate in the exploitation or abuse of minors. If you are using a machine that is involved in illegal activity DO NOT use our website even for legal activity.
